Feb-2019 Partner Event Cape Town: Eve of Opening of Parliament Reception

Event date: 06 February 2019

At the invitation of High Commissioner Nigel Casey, Chamber members joined guests drawn from the worlds of business, politics, academia, culture, sport and media for the annual Eve of Opening of Parliament reception in Bishopscourt.

The evening was themed around digital innovation. Talented musicians linked to British Council programmes in the digital music sector provided the entertainment. Guests were also invited to experience a selection home-grown virtual reality short films courtesy of Electric South, a non-profit incubator for digital creatives.

The High Commissioner’s speech highlighted the recent establishment of a new UK-SA Tech Hub, part of a network that will soon include Kenya, Nigeria, and Brazil. The Hub has a strong focus on digital skills, ecosystem building and commercial partnerships. It also pointed to other successful UK-SA collaborations in the areas of science, innovation and education, including the Newton Fund, a science and innovation programme into which the UK government invests £7m annually, and the Chevening Scholarship programme which has over 700 South African alumni who have completed Masters degrees in the UK.

Chamber members HSBC, Pernod Ricard, Diageo and Jaguar Land Rover were among the event sponsors.
