MEMBERS’ BUSINESS BRIEFING WITH DR NKOSANA MOYO (MINDS), SPONSORED BY BRITISH AMERICAN TOBACCO

Event date: 23 March 2017

The March BCB Business Briefing which was sponsored by British American Tobacco and had Dr Nkosana Moyo, Executive Chair of the Mandela Institute for Development Studies as the guest speaker, took place on 23 March 2017 at the Inanda Club. We also had the privilege to celebrate the end of a successful term with Dame Judith McGregor, Patron of the Chamber.

Bongumusa Makhathini, Corporate Affairs Director of BAT, gave an overview on what the company is doing to constantly innovate and how they are working towards overcoming some key challenges faced within the industry. Chamber Chief Executive, David Dawson, thanked Dame Judith for all her support over the years and for being a key supplier and contributor to the Chamber. Dame Judith shared her experience during her three and a half year tenure as the British High Commissioner to South Africa. She thanked the Chamber team and members for their warmth and insights shared thus far, and made mention of the integral role Chambers have to play in South Africa. Dame Judith also wished Emma Wade-Smith all the best with her new role as the African Trade Director.

Dr Moyo, then approached the podium with an out-of-the box look at African Opportunities in a Disrupted World. He spoke about looking broadly at what may benefit Africa and more specifically South Africa whilst still meeting the needs of corporate interests. Specifically that government and the private sector would need to create an environment where people are not led to rebel. Dr Moyo shared interesting insight into how considering the effect on others, would have far-reaching benefits into uplifting society as a whole.
