Feb-2018 Breakfast: ANC leadership change, SONA and the 2018 Budget – what do they mean for business?

Event date: 23 February 2018

Cape Town’s first members’ breakfast of 2018 took place just over a week after the swearing in of new President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, and within a week of his State of the Nation Address, and of the 2018 Budget announcement.

The timing really couldn’t have been better for us to be joined by political commentators Richard Calland, Professor of Politics at UCT, and Lawson Naidoo, Executive Secretary of the Council for the Advancement of the South African Constitution (CASAC).

Richard and Lawson allowed us to eavesdrop as they talked through topics such as:

  • What is on our new President’s to-do list and where will he start?
  • As the country experiences a mood of exhilaration and optimism, does Ramaphosa’s presidency really signal a ‘new dawn’, a seismic shift in South African politics or not?
  • What can we expect from the imminent Cabinet reshuffle?
  • How are investors viewing recent changes in SA’s political landscape?

Our host and chairperson for the discussion was Chamber patron, High Commissioner Nigel Casey. The capacity crowd of Chamber members contributed comments and questions to round off an engaging and enlightening event.

Location: Bishopscourt, Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa
