Event date: 23 November 2017
Our final Cape Town Business Briefing in 2017 was hosted by PwC in their new Silo District offices, next to the landmark Zeitz MOCAA at the V&A Waterfront. Our topic – responding to the challenges of rapid urbanisation – drew a large and engaged audience.
Councillor Brett Herron, head of the City’s Transport and Urban Development Authority had some sobering facts for us. Cape Town’s low-income households (<R3,200 per month) spend an average of 43% of their income on access (transport). By 2030 Cape Town’s population will be 4.5m. He emphasised the need for an integrated approach to transport and land use.
Next a panel discussion brought in Lyndsey Duff of groundbreaking UK company what3words, and Rashiq Fataar of Our Future Cities. what3words global grid gives every 3m x3m square a three word address. Everyone in the world now has an address. Rashiq challenged us to think about how we use public spaces and to consider what is the responsibility of the public versus private sector. Thanks for a lovely, informative session last night – great venue, food and content for thought.
